On the night of February 23rd to February 24th, 1981, for a few hours, Spain's incipient democracy was in danger. A group of military officers stormed the Congress with the aim of reinstating a military dictatorship six years after Franco's death. The coup's failure brought an end to the long series of military pronouncements that had characterized Spain's history for the previous two centuries.
